Among those punished for violence against nature, Dante encounters his beloved teacher Brunetto Latini. Despite the setting, their exchange is tender and respectful. Brunetto prophesies Dante’s exile and persecution. As he departs, running across the burning sand, he asks only that his literary work survive him.

Why This Matters

Brunetto Latini asks that his book, the Tesoro, be remembered. An author’s immortality through literature, spoken from Hell.
